midweek catch-up. five things that moved since monday.

the 5

1. spacex bought cursor for $60 billion.

three days after IPO'ing, spacex announced its biggest move yet. they're buying cursor (the AI coding tool that lets you write software just by describing what you want) for $60 billion in stock. that's the largest acquisition of a startup ever.

for context, cursor was valued at $29 billion last november. so spacex paid roughly double. cursor will fold into spacex's AI division alongside the team from their earlier xAI merger. translation: the engineers building rockets just got a much faster way to write code.

2. fox is buying roku for $22 billion.

fox (the parent of fox news, fox sports, etc.) announced monday it's acquiring roku at $160 per share in cash and stock. enterprise value: about $22 billion. closes first half of 2027.

the play: combine fox's live sports + news lineup (NFL, MLB, fox news) with roku's roughly 100 million streaming households. tubi (fox's free streaming service) and the roku channel become one of the biggest free streaming bundles in the US.

3. UFC put on a fight card at the white house.

sunday night, UFC held Freedom 250 on the south lawn of the white house to commemorate the 250th anniversary of american independence. about 4,000 people attended in the rain. president trump, VP vance, and most of the cabinet were there.

main event: justin gaethje upset undefeated champion ilia topuria to take the lightweight belt. all seven fights ended early.

4. the US government banned anthropic's flagship AI globally.

friday evening, the US government ordered anthropic to suspend access to claude fable 5 (their flagship consumer model, the one we covered last week) for any foreign national. anthropic couldn't enforce the export rules selectively, so they pulled it globally. their developer-focused model mythos 5 went dark at the same time.

the official reason: a national security concern about a "jailbreak technique" found in the models. anthropic publicly disagrees, saying the vulnerability is minor and exists in other AI models too (including OpenAI's GPT-5.5). their other models (claude opus, sonnet, haiku) still work. but the flagship versions are dark indefinitely.

5. snap launched $2,195 AR glasses. people are roasting them.

snap (the snapchat parent) unveiled a new pair of AR glasses called specs on tuesday. price: $2,195. ships fall 2026 in the US, UK, and france.

what they do: see-through lenses overlay AI and apps onto the real world. ask them questions about what you're looking at, see directions, take photos. 4-hour battery, 20 hours with the charging case.

reception has been mixed. tech twitter has been ruthless about how dorky they look at that price point. the specs are heavy (132 grams, roughly double a pair of meta ray-bans) and the 4-hour battery is a hard sell at $2,195. snap's CEO evan spiegel is betting AR glasses are what comes after smartphones. the early reviews suggest we're not there yet.

heads up: the fed met tuesday-wednesday. markets are now pricing in a rate hike (not cut) by october, a major shift in just weeks. full breakdown monday.

see you monday.
