binance is reopening crypto withdrawals, two delivery apps want to combine, and apple finally put a touchscreen on a MacBook.
3 things worth your time
1. binance is reopening withdrawals after a $6.3 billion hack.
on thursday, attackers stole about $6.3 billion in crypto from binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. they drained wallets the company uses to process transactions, prompting it to pause withdrawals.
binance initially suspected a compromised employee laptop, then said investigators had found additional ways into its systems. the investigation is still ongoing.
on sunday, withdrawals began reopening in phases, including bitcoin, ethereum, and several stablecoins. binance says it has replaced about 95% of the stolen assets and will cover the losses itself. replacing those assets doesn't necessarily mean recovering them from the hackers.
not every coin is available to withdraw yet. binance says it is reopening the remaining options as security checks are completed. it is also still buying back some affected tokens that are harder to source in large quantities.
2. doordash agreed to buy instacart for about $17 billion.
on thursday, doordash announced a deal valuing instacart at $65 per share. at least 75% of the payment would be in cash, with the rest potentially in doordash stock.
the combination would bring doordash's delivery network together with instacart's grocery business, including its shopper network and the systems supermarkets use to take online orders. the deal reaches beyond the two consumer apps: instacart also helps retailers sell through their own websites.
for shoppers, there isn't an immediate app merger. doordash says it expects to retain instacart's brand and app after closing. the companies will operate separately until then.
the expected closing window is late 2027 or the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. the companies promise more choice and delivery savings, but those are proposed benefits, not price cuts customers can count on today.
3. apple's first touchscreen MacBook Pro starts at $2,899.
on wednesday, apple introduced MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens. the 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, both with M5 Pro chips. preorders are open, with deliveries and store availability starting november 6.
the touchscreen models sit alongside apple’s regular MacBook Pro lineup. you can still use the keyboard and trackpad as usual, with touch as another option.
see you later this week.
