apple v openai just kicked off. three AI labs dropped new frontier models in a single day. and SK Hynix had one of the wilder IPO debuts in years.
3 things worth your time
1. apple sued openai for trade secret theft.
apple filed suit in northern california on friday, accusing openai of "orchestrated" IP theft. the complaint says over 400 former apple employees now work at openai. openai's hardware chief tang tan (an ex-apple VP) allegedly directed job candidates to bring "actual parts" to interviews. one ex-apple engineer is accused of stealing a laptop on his way out.
the lawsuit aims to block openai's upcoming consumer hardware device (the one openai is building with former apple designer jony ive). it also effectively kills the 2024 iphone/chatGPT partnership. openai is reportedly preparing a confidential IPO filing at a ~$730 billion valuation.
2. three AI labs dropped new frontier models in one day.
on thursday, openai released GPT-5.6 plus GPT Live (a new real-time voice product). meta launched Muse Spark 1.1 (its agentic coding model). and SpaceXAI released Grok 4.5, its first model built specifically for AI agents and coding, developed with Cursor.
quick refresher: "agentic" models are AI systems that can carry out multi-step tasks on their own (browsing, coding, filing paperwork) instead of just answering questions. the industry has been racing toward these all year.
all three labs are chasing the same market: AI that can take actions, not just answer questions. and openai, meta, and SpaceXAI all landed on the same launch day. zuckerberg returned to X for the first time in years to post about it. meta is also planning to charge for its AI models, breaking from its usual free-and-open-source approach.
3. SK Hynix's $26 billion IPO popped 14%. then monday came.
on friday, korean chip maker SK Hynix (SKHY) debuted on the nasdaq. the $26.5 billion raise made it the largest first-time US listing ever by a foreign company (beating alibaba's 2014 record). shares opened at $170, up 14% from the $149 IPO price. demand was seven times oversubscribed.
context: SK Hynix makes the specialized fast memory (HBM) that goes inside nvidia's AI chips. they're the #2 memory maker globally, and their korean-listed shares are up over 600% in the past year.
monday morning is a different story. the korean stock market (KOSPI) fell 9% overnight on iran war escalation. SK Hynix's US shares are opening under pressure. classic IPO week whiplash.
one more thing
the fed just picked the xbox CEO to lead a jobs task force.
new fed chair kevin warsh announced his slate of task force advisers on thursday. among them: marc andreessen (a16z) and asha sharma, the xbox CEO who just announced 3,200 layoffs last week (we covered it in thursday's briefing).
the timing is striking. sharma announced the cuts on monday. warsh put her on the fed's jobs task force three days later.
see you thursday.
